19th Hagemann Race 2010
Družbinec (Croatia), Sunday 11 July 2010
Few race directors are more experienced in the world of distance running than Anna Hagemann, finisher of more than 120 marathons, 13 ultramarathons and innumerable shorter races.
Every year in July, she organizes a road running event in her home village of Družbinec in the far north of Croatia, very close to the border with Slovenia and just 11 kilometres from the beautiful Baroque town of Varaždin.
The route is as flat as a pancake. The main race (12km) consists of four laps around the village, the fun run (3km) of one lap. Many children take part in short sprint races.
The villagers share Anna's enthusiasm and give her great support. Almost all 100 households in Družbinec provide home-made cakes or some other delicacies for the buffet after the race.
There's no prize fund but a raffle with some valuable prizes, and almost all runners win a prize.
Runners from many European countries have taken part in the race. In 2009, both winners came from Slovenia - Mario Vračić (41:19) and Jožica Šiftar (53:41).
