7th Szentgotthárd Battle Commemoration Run

7. Szentgotthárd Schlachtlauf

Szentgotthárd is a small pleasant town in the far west of Hungary, right on the Austrian border. A country road through the lovely national park of the Őrség hills leads to Slovenia, which is just 16km away.

The 9.5km "Battle Run" is held in remembrance of a seven-hour battle on August 1st 1664, in which the Turkish troops were stopped on their way to Vienna.

The start and the finish of the race are in front of the huge Baroque church in the town centre, next to a nice public park. The race follows an out-and-back course across the Austrian border and up a hill with an elevation gain of about 90 metres. The turning point is at the memorial on top of the hill.

You will run a short section across the former Iron Curtain on a dirt road but most of the route is on asphalt roads.

The first 100 entries will be awarded with a ticket for the brand new thermal spa in Szentgotthárd, and all competitors can indulge in a Hungarian goulash soup.
