This 43km multi-terrain race is staged in the mountains to the west of the Styrian capital Graz. In 2009, the event will host the first Austrian Mountain Marathon Championships.

The start and finish is in the village of Kainach (540m).

The route is one loop up to the Gleinalpe mountain range and back down to the valley.

After approximately 13km you will come to the highest point on the course, which is at an elevation of 1790m. From there, it's mainly downhill but there are still many shorter uphill sections on the way home. Overall, you will have to run about 1800m up and 1800m down.

If you like, you can cover the distance in a relay team of three runners, or take part in a 20k nordic walking competition.

The race is very popular with the neighbours from Hungary. In 2008, 18 out of 110 finishers were Hungarians, including the winner. Miklós Zatykó won the Bergmarathon in 3:31:58, followed by his compatriot and ultra runner János Zabari (3:39:37). Austria's Reinhold Pototschnik came third (3:44:15). Anita Waiss from Austria led the women home in 4:17:50.

The relay competition saw a team of three Kenyan runners winning in a stunning time of 2:52:49.
