Zalaegerszeg (Hungary), Saturday 31 December 2016
Hungary's last running event of the year, the Egerszegi Mountain Man Marathon, is held on New Year's Eve in the city of Zalaegerszeg in the far west of the country.
Participants can choose between four routes. The shortest route is relatively flat but the longer routes are very hilly:
Race distance | Ascent/descent | Time limit | Number of finishers 2015 |
3.5km | 64 | ||
10.1km | +190m/-190m | 1hr 49min | 222 |
24.2km | +360m/-360m | 2hr 59min | 99 |
40.9km | +720m/-720m | 5hr 29min | 51 |
Although the event offers prizes to the fastest finishers in the overall ranking and in each age group, most runners take it more as a fun run than as a serious race.
The routes are marked but they are not closed to traffic, and there are not very many marshals on the course. You need to look out for the course markers if you don't follow local runners who know the route.
Starting at 9am at the Deák Ferenc Szakközépiskola college in the south-western part of Zalaegerszeg (approximately 1.5km from the city centre), participants run on mixed terrain (roads, pavements, cycleways and trails) through woods, vineyards, parks, residential areas and industrial portions of the city.
Last year, a record 436 runners took part in the "MMM". Gábor Németh set a new course record in the 40.9km race (2:45:57). Ultra marathon runner Szilvia Lubics was the first lady across the line (3:21:24).
