Held yearly on New Year's Eve in Zalaegerszeg, a city of about 55,000 people in western Hungary, the Egerszegi Mountain Man Marathon (or Szilveszteri Hegyimaraton) is a terrific running event which boasts four scenic routes and the relaxed feel of a local race.
Many participants take the ‘MMM’ more as a fun run than as a serious race.
The 3.5km route is relatively flat but the longer routes are very hilly:
Race distance | Ascent/descent | Time limit |
3.5km | ||
10.1km | +190m/-190m | 1hr 49min |
24.2km | +360m/-360m | 2hr 59min |
40.9km | +720m/-720m | 5hr 29min |
Starting at the Deák Ferenc Szakközépiskola, a college situated approximately one and a half kilometres south-west of the city centre, the marathon route runs on mixed terrain (roads, pavements, cycleways and trails) mainly through woods, vineyards, parks and residential areas.
The route is not closed to traffic during the event, and there may not be very many marshals on the marathon course. So, don't lose sight of the course markers!
The finish line is inside the gym of the college—a fine place to rest and chat and refuel after the run.
