The Kyffhäuser Berglauf is a long-standing and popular event, held every year since 1979 in the small Kyffhäuser hill range in the state of Thüringen (Thuringia) in central Germany.

Approximately 1,200 runners, 500 walkers and 500 mountain bikers took part in the event last year.

Runners can choose between four hilly multi-terrain races — 6km, 14.9km, 22.2km (Halbmarathon) or 42.2km (Berg-Marathon).

All races begin and end in Bad Frankenhausen, a very pretty old spa town that sits at the foot of the Kyffhäuser.

The marathon route, which features more than 600 metres of ascent, takes the runners up to the highest peak of the hill range, the Kulpenberg (473m), and to the imposing Kyffhäuserdenkmal, Germany's third-largest monument.
