Three popular "Marcialonga" sports events are held every year in the Dolomites in Italy's Trentino province. The cross-country ski race in January draws 7000 participants, the cycling race in May/June about 2000, and the running race in September has around 1400 participants.
The "Marcialonga Running" course is 25.5 kilometres long. Start is in the small town of Moena (1165m) in the Val di Fassa. Competitors run on roads and trails along the River Avisio to the ski resort of Cavalese (983m) in the Val di Fiemme.
Most of the race is downhill. The course drops about 300 metres over the first 22 kilometres. The final 3.5K are tough, however, as the route climbs again about 130 metres.
In 2010, the winners were Hicham El Barouki of Morocco (1:20:02) and Italy's Federica Ballarini (1:35:53).
