Like many other running events organized by the athletic club LCC Wien, the Babenbergerlauf comprises a half marathon and a 7K run, held on a very flat and fast course in Vienna's Prater park.
The start and the finish are near the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Austria's largest stadium. The route is a 7-kilometre loop, which is traffic-free and AIMS-certified. Most of the course runs out-and-back the Prater Hauptallee, the main avenue through the park.
There won't be any prize money for top athletes. Instead, all runners will be entered in a raffle for the "Babenberger Goldtausender", a valuable 12-gram gold coin introduced in the year 1976 with a denomination of 1000 Austrian schillings (the schilling has been replaced by the euro since 2002).
Around 200 runners took part in last year's event. The half marathon winners were Karsten Kühne (1:15:02) and Susanne Pumper (1:26:52).
