Zagreb Marathon 2010 - Mónika Nagy and Ida Kovács (Copyright © 2010 Hendrik Böttger / runinternational.eu)

Hungary's top runners Mónika Nagy and Ida Kovács in last year's half marathon.

Compared to most other city marathons in Central Europe, the Zagreb Marathon is a small event. Last year, 235 runners finished the 42K marathon, and around 500 took part in the half marathon.

The full marathon consists of two laps of a very mildly undulating course.

The start and the finish are on Trg bana Jelačića (Ban Jelačić Square), Zagreb's elegant main square and the city's central meeting point, crossed by seven tram lines.

The route is an out-and-back course. Competitors run eastwards to the suburb of Dubec, back to the main square, then westwards along Ilica (a busy shopping street), and home to the finish.

In the city centre, the road surface and the tram tracks demand some concentration. Along Ilica, you should expect a bit of car traffic, as well as pedestrians crossing the course.

In 2010, the marathon winners were Ashenafi Erkolo of Ethiopia (2:23:51) and Veronika Lopatina of Russia (2:41:24).
