5th "From the Lake to the Mountain"

From the lake ...

This scenic mountain race in southern Austria travels from the Wörthersee, the largest lake in the province of Carinthia, up the hills of the Ossiacher Tauern.

Along its entire length (9.2 kilometres) the route runs along traffic-free asphalt roads.

The race features a modest elevation gain of 518 metres. Some sections are relatively steep but the route levels out quite often, and it includes a few mild downhill sections as well.

Start is at the Casino in Velden, a flashy resort at the western end of the Wörthersee.

The course is nice as it passes pretty churches, lovely alpine houses and a small reedy lake. It also offers fine panoramic views of the Karavanks mountain range.

From the finish, which is at a restaurant at an elevation of 922 metres, participants get a glimpse of Lake Ossiach before they walk back 1.5 kilometres to the award ceremony in the village of Köstenberg, home of one of the leading golf courses in Austria.

After the event, buses take the runners home to Velden.

In 2009, the winners were Robert Stark (37:39) and Sylvie Tramoy (44:16).
