Can you imagine over 1700 runners on the little Hauptplatz?

Over 1700 runners took part in last year's edition of the Schilcherlauf in the town of Stainz, which is situated amid the rolling hills of the small Schilcher wine region in the Austrian province of Styria.

Stainz is located around 25 kilometres to the south-west of the city of Graz.

It's a very small, attractive old town with a pretty Hauptplatz and a castle on a hill. Stainz is well known for the production of Schilcher, a rosé wine with high acidity.

The event offers various races: 5.25k, 10.5k (two laps), 15.75k (three laps), and 21.1k (four laps).

All races start and finish on the main square.

The route is traffic-free and mildly undulating. Each lap features an elevation gain of approximately 30 metres. About half of the course is through pumpkin and corn fields.

The atmosphere on the main square is usually very good, and there will be live music on the course as well.

In 2009, the half marathon winners were Manfred Konrad (1:09:42) and Slovenia's Ida Šurbek (1:20:54).
