Held every year at the end of October in Vienna's vast Prater park, the Herbstmarathon features a pancake-flat, traffic-free and AIMS-certified course.

The route is the same that is used in many other running events organized by the athletics club LCC Wien.

The start and finish are near the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Austria's largest football stadium.

Participants run 7-kilometre laps, mainly out-and-back the chestnut-tree-lined Prater Hauptallee, the main artery through the park. Each lap has one turning point and two feed stations.

The event includes a 7k race (one lap), a half marathon (three laps plus 97.5 metres at the end), and a full marathon (six laps and an additional 195 metres).

In 2009, Elisha Sawe of Kenya (2:17:03) and Austria's Ilse Wieshuber (2:52:39) won the marathon. Andreas Ringhofer (1:07:53) and Tatyana Vilisova (1:18:36) were the top half marathon finishers.
