3. Balaton Szupermaraton 2010

Want to go for a jog around the lake?

Okay, I know, Lake Balaton in Hungary is Central Europe's largest lake, and it's 194.5km to run once around, but don't panic, you can take your time. The race is split in four stages, which means that you run just a little bit more than the classic marathon distance each day. And the route is nice and quiet, mainly on footpaths and cycle paths close to the shore.

In the unlikely case you still find that a bit too much you may think about completing the race in a relay team of up to four runners. Or you run the last two stages only.

Another option would be to join the field on any stage to run a single short ultra marathon ("Marathon+").

The four stages are as follows:

  • 18 March 2010 (Thursday): Siófok - Fonyód: 46.8km
  • 19 March 2010 (Friday): Fonyód - Szigliget: 52.9km
  • 20 March 2010 (Saturday): Badacsony - Balatonfüred: 43.1km
  • 21 March 2010 (Sunday): Balatonfüred - Siófok: 51.7km

You can choose to run all four stages (or just the last two stages)

  • as an individual
  • as a relay in pairs (each stage is split in two sections) or
  • as a relay in teams of three or four runners (each stage is split in three sections).

In 2009, the top supermarathon runner was Zoltán Fajfrik , finishing in a time of 13hrs 52min (that's a pace of 4:17 per km, or 6:53 per mile).

Viktória Makai led the women home in 17hrs 55min (5:32 per km, or 8:54 per mile).
