The races around the Pressegger See in Austria's state of Kärnten attract around 400 runners, including a fair number of holiday makers and day trippers from neighbouring countries.

Two races are on offer, both following undulating trails and minor roads.

The 5.6km ‘Seelaufklassiker’ ("Classic Lake Race") is one loop around the lake.

The 12.4km ‘Lange Seerunde’ ("Long loop around the lake") includes an additional loop around the reeds to the east of the lake.

The Pressegger See sits in an idyllic location near the small town of Hermagor in the 100km-long Gailtal (Gail River Valley) which runs parallel to the border with Italy.

Situated at an elevation of 560 metres, the lake is hemmed in by 2000-metre peaks to the north and south. Reeds cover the eastern and western shores.

The lake is one kilometre long and 600 metres wide and great for a swim as the water is very clean and warm in the summer.

Access to the lake is very limited but participants get a free ticket to the beach.

In 2009, the winners of the 12.4km race were Erich Kokaly (41:38) and Ulrike Striednig (55:11).
