The half marathon along the northern shore of the Wörthersee has become the largest running event in the province of Carinthia in southern Austria. "Kärnten läuft" ("Carinthia runs") is the motto of this event, and almost 4,000 runners followed that call last year and took part in either the half marathon or the 10.5km race.

The Wörthersee is widely known as a high-society playground and a popular summer holiday destination for a fashionable and affluent society, and again many runners will participate in the event just to see and be seen.

In the last years, brightly-coloured lightweight high-performance sausage skins round the waist were very much in vogue, together with trendy compression stockings, stylish visor caps and state-of-the-art wrist computers. What will be the trend this summer?

The start of the 21km catwalk is on the promenade in Velden, a flashy resort with a casino and a castle at the western end of the lake. The 10.5k race starts en route in Pörtschach, another posh and expensive lakeside resort.

Participants run on mildly undulating roads and cycle paths. As a large part of the shore is in private hands only some sections of the course are along the lakefront. The finish is in the Europapark at the lake's eastern end, about 4 kilometres from the town centre of Klagenfurt.

After the race, runners get free entry to the bathing beach to cool off with a swim in the wonderful blue-green waters of the Wörthersee.

In 2009, the half marathon winners were Isaac Toroitich-Kosgei of Kenya (1:03:56) and Hungary's Anikó Kálovics (1:15:19).
