27th Run around Lake Pressegg
Hermagor (Austria), Saturday 15 August 2009
The two races of 5.6km and 12.4km around Lake Pressegg in the Austrian province of Carinthia are very popular with German holiday makers and day trippers from Italy and Slovenia. In 2008, more than a quarter of the competitors came from foreign countries.
It's easy to see why. The lake has a very idyllic location at an elevation of 560 metres, and it's surrounded by reeds to the east and west and by 2000m mountains to the north and south. It's 1km long and 600m wide, and great for a swim as the water is very clean and it warms up quickly in the summer.
The 5.6km Seelaufklassiker (classic lake race) takes you once around the lake. After 3km you will have to climb a small hill of about 50m.
The 12.4km Lange Seerunde (long loop around the lake) incorporates an additional loop around the reeds to the east of the lake, and another small hill after about 10km.
Access to the lake is very limited but you will get a free ticket to the Strandbad.
