Held annually in the spring in Belgrade (Serbian: Beograd), capital of Serbia, the Belgrade Marathon (Beogradski Maraton) is a prestigious and popular road running event that usually attracts an international crowd of more than 6,000 runners.
Currently, it offers four race options:
- 10km (trka na 10km)
- 21.1km half marathon (polumaraton)
- 21.1km half marathon relay for teams of four runners (štafetni polumaraton)
- 42.2km marathon (maraton)
The half marathon is one lap and the full marathon is two different laps through New Belgrade (Novi Beograd) which spreads across the very flat terrain on the left bank of the Sava river:
Both races begin and end, however, in the hilly old part of Belgrade which is on the right bank of the river.
Starting on Bulevar kralja Aleksandra, the first three kilometres take the runners down to the river (about 60 metres of descent). The last two kilometres are run uphill (about 50 metres of ascent). The finish line is at the venerable old Hotel Moskva on Terazije, Belgrade's main square, which is situated approximately 700 metres from the start area.
