Blossoming apple orchards and snow-capped 3,000-metre mountain peaks provide a superb backdrop for the Half Marathon Meran-Algund, a road running race held each spring in the autonomous province of South Tyrol in the far north of Italy where the majority of people speak German as a first language.
The route begins and ends in the spa town of Meran (Italian: Merano) which is well known for its mild climate and lush Mediterranean vegetation.
The course consists of three gently-undulating laps—a 4km loop through Meran followed by two loops (ca. 8.5km each) through the orchards between Meran and the pretty Tyrolean village of Algund (Italian: Lagundo).
Update (January 2023):
In December 2022 it was announced that the 28th Half Marathon Meran-Algund, which had been held on 1 May 2022, was the last and final one.
