The S1 Trail, or la corsa della bora ("the bora wind run"), is a multi-terrain running event held yearly in January in the Province of Trieste in the north-eastern corner of Italy.

Starting at three different locations, the event offers four tremendously-scenic races:

Race distance Name Ascent Descent Start Finish
ca. 16km S1 Sprint +440m -440m Visogliano Visogliano
ca. 21km S1 Half +640m -890m Opičina
ca. 57km S1 Trail +2,420m -2,790m Pesek
ca. 167km S1 Ultra +6,750m -6,750m Visogliano

The finish line is at the campo sportivo in the village of Visogliano, which is approximately twenty kilometres from the city centre of Trieste:

All routes run along the Gulf of Trieste and through the carso, the beautiful wind-swept Karst Plateau that rises steeply from the Adriatic Sea.

The 16km and 21km races take place entirely on Italian soil whereas the 57km and 167km routes take the runners through two countries: Italy and Slovenia.

The 167km run is an extremely-demanding event. Only highly-experienced trail runners are able to finish this race. There may be strong winds and plenty of snow on the course which is very technical in parts. The highest point on the course is at 1,074m above sea level.
