Held annually in March, the Kokos Trail features two very challenging and spectacularly-scenic trail running races around the village of Basovizza which sits on the thinly-populated carso (Karst Plateau) above the Adriatic port of Trieste in the north-eastern corner of Italy, very close to the border with Slovenia.

The 10k race includes around 400 metres of ascent, the 16k race approximately 600 metres.

Starting and finishing at Basovizza's Campo Zarja football pitch (at 390 metres above sea level), the route runs through beautiful woods and grassland.

Both routes take the runners up and down the slopes of Monte Cocusso (Slovene: Kokoš; 672 metres).

The event also offers a non-competitive 8k run with 200 metres of ascent.

Entrants to the 10k and 16k races have to be in possession of a valid certificato medico (medical certificate) if they are not a member of a running club recognized by World Athletics. You don't need such a certificate for the 8k run.
