Kokos Trail, Trieste, Italy (Copyright © 2013 Hendrik Böttger / runinternational.eu)

Usually held annually in March, the Kokos Trail features two very challenging and spectacularly-scenic trail running races around the village of Basovizza which sits on the thinly-populated carso (Karst Plateau) above the Adriatic port of Trieste in the north-eastern corner of Italy.

The 10km race features around 400 metres of ascent, the 15km race 600 metres.

Starting and finishing at Basovizza's Campo Zarja football pitch (at about 380 metres above sea level), the route takes the runners through beautiful woods and grassland in two countries, Italy and Slovenia. (In 2021, the race will not cross the border.)

The highest point on the 15km course is at an elevation of 672 metres on the wooded Monte Cocusso (Slovene: Kokoš).
