Held yearly in May on Helgoland (English: Heligoland), a tiny North Sea island located about fifty kilometres off the German coast, the Helgoland Marathon stands out as a unique running event.

Three race options are available for participants:

  • 5.25km Mini-Marathon: one lap
  • 10-Meilen-Lauf (10 miles = 16.09km): 343m + three laps
  • 42.195km Marathon: 195m + eight laps

Starting and finishing at the Südstrand beach, the route is very challenging as it takes the runners on paved paths through the Unterland (the low-lying parts of Helgoland) as well as around the Oberland plateau.

The difference between the lowest and the highest point on the course is approximately fifty metres.

The time limit to complete the course is six hours.
