Held annually in October in Dresden, capital of the state of Sachsen (Saxony) in eastern Germany, the Dresden Marathon offers four very scenic races:
- 21.1km half marathon
- 42.2km marathon
All races begin and end on the northern edge of the city centre, one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations.
Participants in the 4.2km and 10km races run on roads and bike paths along the Elbe river, passing a number of monumental historic buildings (pictured).
The half marathon is one lap and the full marathon is two laps of a mainly flat course which runs along the river, through the city centre and through the beautiful Großer Garten park.
The second lap of the marathon is a bit different from the first lap. Approximately two kilometres of the marathon route are run on cobbles or on gravel.
