Held at the 10-kilometre-long Tollensesee, the eighth-largest of more than 1,000 lakes in the Mecklenburg Lake District in northern Germany, the Tollenseseelauf offers the following races:
- 400m - 800m Kinderläufe (children's races; on Friday)
- 2km (fun run)
- 10km
- 13km Walking, Nordic Walking
- 21.1km Halbmarathon (half marathon)
- 42.2km Marathon
- 42.2km Staffelmarathon (relay race for teams of four runners)
The self-proclaimed "Der Härteste im Norden" ("The hardest in the north") features a very challenging course indeed.
Although there are no significant hills in the region the course is far from flat. Marathon runners face over 450 metres of ascent (and the same of descent).
The race is run on all sorts of terrain (asphalt, cobbles, concrete, dirt roads, forest trails, ...).
But it's worth all the effort as it's a scenic run through lovely rolling countryside.
The start and the finish line are in the Kulturpark in Neubrandenburg, an old town of about 60,000 people, situated approximately 140 kilometres north of Berlin.
The marathon route is one loop around the lake.
The 10k, the 13k and the half marathon are out-and-back courses.
