The Rügenbrücken-Marathon is held annually in October in the Hanseatic town of Stralsund which sits on the coast of the Baltic Sea in Germany.

The event features races for all ages and fitness levels:

  • 3km kids' run
  • 6km run or walk
  • 10km run or walk
  • 21.1km half marathon
  • 42.2km marathon

All races take the participants across the imposing Rügenbrücke (‘Rügen Bridge’) which connects Stralsund with the holiday island of Rügen. Opened in 2007, the bridge is 2,831 metres long and normally reserved for motor traffic.

The 3k, 6k and 10k routes are out and back across the bridge (or part of the bridge).

Half marathon and marathon runners run across the Rügenbrücke, through rural areas on the island, and then across the Rügendamm (‘Rügen Causeway’), which is 70 years older than the new bridge, back to Stralsund.

The marathon route includes an out-and-back run along the west coast of Rügen.

Some sections of the course are unpaved.
