Blick zum Brocken - Christian Morgenstern (1829)

The Harz Gebirgslauf (‘Harz Mountain Run’) is held annually on the second Saturday of October in the densely-wooded Harz mountain range which is located on the former border between East and West Germany.

It's a long-standing and popular multi-terrain running event with over 3,000 participants, offering challenging up-and-down loop courses for runners ...

  • 2km Brockenkinder-Lauf (for children 5-10 years old)
  • 4.8km
  • 11.2km
  • 22.5km Halb-Marathon
  • 42.2km Brocken-Marathon

... and hikers ...

  • 11km Wandern / Nordic Walking
  • 25.1km Wandern / Nordic Walking

All routes begin and end in Hasserode on the edge of Wernigerode, a picturesque old town with many colourful half-timbered buildings and a fairy-tale castle towering on a hill above the town.

The Brocken-Marathon features a gruelling route that includes more than 1,000 metres of ascent as it takes the runners across the windswept summit of the Brocken (1,141m), the Harz's highest mountain.
