The Harz Gebirgslauf (‘Harz Mountain Run’) is held annually on the second Saturday of October in the densely-wooded Harz mountain range which is located on the former border between East and West Germany.
It's a long-standing and popular multi-terrain running event with over 3,000 participants, offering challenging up-and-down loop courses for runners ...
- 2km Brockenkinder-Lauf (for children 5-10 years old)
- 22.5km Halb-Marathon
- 42.2km Brocken-Marathon
... and hikers ...
- 11km Wandern / Nordic Walking
- 25.1km Wandern / Nordic Walking
All routes begin and end in Hasserode on the edge of Wernigerode, a picturesque old town with many colourful half-timbered buildings and a fairy-tale castle towering on a hill above the town.
The Brocken-Marathon features a gruelling route that includes more than 1,000 metres of ascent as it takes the runners across the windswept summit of the Brocken (1,141m), the Harz's highest mountain (pictured above).
Only the kids' run, the 11.2km run and the 42.2km marathon will be offered this year. The other races have been cancelled.
