The Sljemenski Maraton (English: ‘Sljeme Marathon’ or ‘Hog's Trail Marathon’) is Croatia's oldest trail running event.
It is held every year in the summer on the densely-wooded Medvednica mountain which rises to the north of Zagreb.
The start and the finish are at the Tourist apartments Snježna kraljica near the top of Sljeme (1,033m), the highest peak of the mountain.
Three races are available:
- 14km (one lap)
- 42.2km (three laps)
- 42.2km relay (three laps) for mixed teams of three runners
The route is a very challenging loop on woodland trails. Each lap features 580 metres of descent and 580 metres of ascent!
Sljeme is a twenty-kilometre uphill drive from Zagreb's city centre. You can get there by car or you can use a combination of tram and public bus.
