The Zirbitzkogel Berglauf is a mountain running event that takes place annually in late June or early July in the Steiermark (Styria) province in Austria.
The course is 11.2 kilometres long and includes 1,106 metres of ascent, finishing on the summit of the Zirbitzkogel (2,397m), the highest peak of the Seetaler Alpen (Seetal Alps).
Only 150 competitors are allowed to take part in this highly-scenic and strenuous race, so entries may fill up before the closing date.
Starting in the small village of Sankt Anna am Lavantegg (1,291m), which sits on the eastern slopes of the Zirbitzkogel, the first five kilometres are run on forest trails.
The forest slowly clears at the Waldheimhütte mountain hut (1,620m).
The second half of the race is run on trails and gravel roads through alpine tundra.
The finish line is at the Zirbitzkogel Schutzhaus, the oldest mountain hut in the Steiermark, built in 1870 (pictured below).
In addition to the 11.2k race, the event offers a 6k short course with 600 metres of ascent for young athletes, for runners over 60 and for nordic walkers, starting at the Waldheimhütte.
After the race, participants have to walk back to the Waldheimhütte from where a bus takes them home to Sankt Anna.
