The Berliner Halbmarathon is one of Central Europe's most popular running events. All 30,000 bibs for the April 2017 edition of the half marathon through Germany's capital city were sold out in late November 2016.

For the first time, the race was sold out more than four months before the start — although the registration fees have been raised considerably over the last years.

The average entry fee has risen from € 37.50 for the 2014 edition to € 49.65 for the event in 2018 — a price hike of 32.4%. This certainly does not reflect the inflation rate which ranged between 0.3% and 1.8% in Germany during the same period.

Every finisher receives a medal. The event T-shirt (€ 30) or the pasta party (€ 18) are not included in the fees.

You need to register early if you want to run the race, but be aware that there's no way to get your money back once you've paid, not even with a doctor's certificate, and it's not possible to defer your race entry to next year, or transfer the race number to another runner.

The course, however, is flat and fast (if that's what you're after) and it's scenic as well.

Starting and finishing on Karl-Marx-Allee, a monumental socialist boulevard in the eastern part of Berlin, the route passes many landmarks in both the former West and East sectors of the city.

It visits, for instance, the grand buildings on the ‘Unter den Linden’ boulevard, the famous Brandenburg Gate, the vast Tiergarten park, the Berlin Victory Column (pictured above), the Charlottenburg Palace and the Kurfürstendamm boulevard.
