Set in the Julian Alps in Slovenia, the Bovec Marathon offers three multi-terrain races through the strinkingly-beautiful Soča Valley (Soška dolina).

Start time
Race distance Number of finishers 2016
9.00 7.4km Fun Run 401
10.30 21.1km Half Marathon 660
42.2km Marathon 173

More than 1,200 runners took part in last year's event, the first Bovec Marathon since 1985. For 2017, the entry limit has been raised to 2,300 and we dare speculate that the event might be sold out ahead of time.

The start and the finish are on the main square of the small town of Bovec, a popular destination for skiers in the winter and for kayakers and hikers in the summer.

Situated at an elevation of about 460 metres in the Bovec Basin (Bovška kotlina), the town is surrounded by steep, densely-wooded mountains on all sides.

All three routes are single-loop courses which are highly scenic and varied.

But they have not been designed to set any personal records. The fun run features about 50 metres of ascent, the half marathon 160 metres, and the full marathon 410 metres. Approximately one third of the marathon course is on gravel roads or trails.
