Brașov (Romania), Sunday 21 May 2017
Within just two years, the Brasov International Marathon has made its name as one of Romania's best-known running events.
More than 1,000 runners, not including the children's races, took part in last year's road races through the city of Brașov which is also known as Kronstadt by the Germans and as Brassó by the Hungarians.
Situated at the foot of the Carpathians in the Transylvania region, Brașov is Romania's seventh-largest city with a population of more than 250,000 people.
It can be easily reached by train from Bucharest in about two and a half hours.
These are the races on offer:
Race distance | Finishers 2016 | Entry limit 2017 |
5km charity run | 181 | 660 runners |
10.55km quarter marathon | 294 | 660 runners |
21.1km half marathon | 256 | 336 runners |
42.2km marathon | 87 | 210 runners |
42.2km relay (4 runners) | 58 | 65 teams |
In 2017, like in the last two years, the start and the finish will be on Piața Sfatului, Brașov's very beautiful main square in the heart of the Old Town.
The routes, however, will be different.
The 5k, the quarter marathon and the half marathon will be undulating single-loop courses through different parts of the city.
In contrast, the 42.2km marathon will be a very challenging run with more than 400 metres of elevation change! The race will begin with a 5km-long warm-up loop before the route will climb for about 11km to the Poiana Brașov ski resort. The highest point on the course will be at an elevation of 968 metres. From there, you'll run the same way back to the city centre. The last 15km will follow the half marathon course.
The registration fees for the 5k run (and 15% of the fees for the other races) will be donated to a charity that supports children and adults suffering from incurable diseases.
