The annual Eisbärlauf ("Polar Bear Run") race series in Vienna comprises three road running events: one in January, one in February and one in March.

Each event offers a 7km race, a 14km race and a 21.1km half marathon. The events in February and in March also include a 28km run.

The route is a 7km loop through the Wiener Prater, Vienna's largest public park.

Starting near the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Austria's biggest stadium, the route consists of a 3km loop and a 4km out-and-back run along Prater Hauptallee, the main avenue through the park.

The turnaround point is at the Wiener Riesenrad, Vienna's famous Ferris wheel, which stands in the ‘Wurstelprater’ amusement park.

The course is AIMS-certified, pancake-flat and traffic-free.

In 2016, each single Eisbärlauf event had more than 1,100 finishers.

The Eisbärlauf in January 2017 will be the 593rd running event that is organized by the athletics club LCC Wien, so you can expect things to run smoothly. You just can't be sure about the weather.
