Held annually in the summer in the Hansestadt Rostock (Hanseatic City of Rostock), a Baltic Sea port in northern Germany, the Marathon Nacht ("Marathon Night") offers these races:

Race distance Start time Number of finishers 2016
Schülerlauf (children born 2002 - 2009) 17.00 38
42.2km Marathon 18.00 289
Marathonstaffel (marathon relay for teams of 2-8 runners) 61 teams
7.7km "Rostocker 7" 19.07 190
21.1km Halbmarathon (half marathon) 19.55 926

The 42.2km marathon begins and ends on Neuer Markt, the main square in Rostock's Old Town.

The route consists of two 3.1km-long loops through the city centre, followed by a 36km-long loop which takes the runners along the River Warnow, through rural areas, through to the Warnow Tunnel (a 790m-long road tunnel under the river), through the IGA Park which was created for the 2003 Internationale Gartenschau (World Horticultural Exposition), once again through the tunnel, and then back home to the city centre.

Half marathon runners join the marathon field at the the halfway mark of the marathon, which is at the eastern entrance to the Warnow Tunnel. They also run twice through the tunnel.

Last year, the fastest half marathon finishers were Louis Hellmuth (1:15:56) and Simone Raatz (1:20:38). The marathon winners were Carsten Tautorat (2:51:40) and Franziska Jung (3:07:48). The time limit to complete the course is 5hr 30min.

In case you prefer the German North Sea coast to the German Baltic Sea coast — the City Marathon Bremerhaven will be held just a few hours after the event in Rostock.
