Held annually in the summer in the Hansestadt Rostock (Hanseatic City of Rostock), a Baltic Sea port in northern Germany, the Marathon Nacht (Marathon Night) offers five races:

  • 1.7km Schülerlauf (children's race)
  • 7km Rostocker 7
  • 21.1km Halbmarathon (half marathon)
  • 42.2km Marathon
  • 42.2km Marathon Staffel (relay for teams of up to six runners; 6 x 7km)

All races, except for the half marathon, begin and end at the Stadthafen (city harbour) on the edge of the Old Town.

The kids' run, the 7km race and the relay take place in the harbour area.

The marathon route consists of a 7km loop through the harbour, followed by a 35km loop which takes the runners along the Warnow river, through rural areas, through the Warnow Tunnel (a 790m-long road tunnel under the river), through the IGA Park which was created for the 2003 Internationale Gartenschau (World Horticultural Exposition), once again through the tunnel, and then back home to the city harbour.

Half marathon runners join the marathon field at the the halfway mark of the marathon, which is at the eastern entrance to the Warnow Tunnel. They also run twice through the tunnel.
