Leipzig (Germany), Sunday 9 April 2017
The Leipzig Marathon is a long-standing event that has been held since 1977 in sports-mad Leipzig, a city of 560,000 people in the state of Sachsen (Saxony) in eastern Germany.
Over the last 40 years, the race has attracted many world-class distance runners, among them former world record holder Tegla Loroupe of Kenya, Leipzig-born Uta Pippig (three-time winner of the marathons in Boston and Berlin), and Saxony's Jörg Peter who held the German marathon record for 27 years.
In 2016, the winners came from Germany. Marc Werner was the first runner across the line in a time of 2hr 39min 29sec. Laura Clart was the fastest woman in 2hr 53min 47sec.
In addition to the 42.2km marathon, the event offers races for all ages and abilities:

All races begin and end at the modern football arena in the Sportforum complex which is situated approximately 2km to the west of the historic town centre.
The full marathon is two laps of the half marathon course. Participants must complete the first lap in 2hr 30min.
The route is AIMS/IAAF-certified and mainly flat and fast, and it passes many of Leipzig's most interesting sights, for instance the Neues Rathaus (pictured above) or the Augustusplatz in the city centre:
The marathon route also visits the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, a colossal monument erected in 1913 to commemorate Napoleon's defeat in the ‘Battle of the Nations’ near Leipzig 100 years earlier:
