Held in Hanover (German: Hannover), a city of about 525,000 people in northern Germany, the Hannover Marathon is the biggest running event in the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen).

In 2016, approximately 2,000 athletes took part in the 42.2km marathon, 7,000 in the 21.1km half marathon and 4,000 in the 10k race which is also open to walkers and nordic walkers.

Five hundred teams (of up to six runners) ran the full marathon as a relay.

All races feature single-loop courses that are mainly flat and fast, starting and finishing at the imposing New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus).

The marathon and half marathon routes visit many of Hanover's best sights, including the 2.4km-long Maschsee lake and the impressive palaces and vast parks of the Herrenhausen Gardens (Herrenhäuser Gärten).

The time limit to complete the course is four and a half hours for the half and six hours for the full marathon.

The event also offers races for children, fun runners, inline skaters and handbikers.
