The Berliner Halbmarathon is one of Central Europe's most popular running events. All 30,000 bibs for the April 2016 edition of the half marathon through Germany's capital were sold out in mid-December 2015—three and a half months before the start.

Almost 24,000 runners completed the course. The fastest finishers were Richard Mengich of Kenya (59 minutes 58 seconds) and Dutch-Kenyan athlete Elizeba Cherono (1 hour 10 minutes 43 seconds).

Starting and finishing on Karl-Marx-Allee, a monumental socialist boulevard in the eastern part of Berlin, the route is flat and fast, and it is also very scenic as it passes many landmarks in both the former West and East sectors of the city.

The route visits, for instance, the grand buildings on the ‘Unter den Linden’ boulevard, the famous Brandenburg Gate, the vast Tiergarten park, the Berlin Victory Column (pictured), the magnificent Charlottenburg Palace and the Kurfürstendamm boulevard.
