The Kassel Marathon draws around 3,000 half marathon runners, 500 marathon runners and 500 marathon relay teams to the streets of Kassel, a city of about 200,000 people, located in a hilly region in the state of Hesse in central Germany.

Both the half and the full marathon feature an undulating single-loop course which begins at the Auestadion on the edge of the vast Baroque Karlsaue park in the southern part of the city. The finish line is on the athletics track inside the stadium.

The difference between the lowest and the highest point on the marathon course is approximately 60 metres. From start to finish, the 42.2-kilometre route includes 180 metres of ascent. The time limit to finish the race is six hours.

Kassel has largely a postwar appearance. Most of its historic buildings were destroyed in World War Two. It's a very green city, however, and well worth a visit for its wonderful parks and its fine museums and art exhibitions.
