Selz di Ronchi dei Legionari (Italy), Thursday 2 June 2016
The Marcia dei tre laghi is a long-standing non-competitive event that attracts 2,000 or more runners and hikers every year.
The event offers four very scenic multi-terrain routes (5km, 11km, 18km, 28km) through the wooded hills of the carso (Karst region) in the north-east of Italy.
As a marcia is a non-competitive event without timekeeping or results lists, many participants take their time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. It doesn't matter if you run or walk. Prizes are awarded to the largest groups, not to the fastest finishers.
The start/finish area is in the village of Selz which is located in the municipality of Ronchi dei Legionari, near the shipbuilding town of Monfalcone in the Gulf of Trieste.
The route visits not only tre laghi (three lakes) but also the well-restored World War One trenches of the Parco Tematico della Grande Guerra (Great War Open Museum).
Along the course, there are several well-stocked feed stations. When we tested the event, participants indulged in sardines, grilled polenta, red and white wine, fruit, tea, biscuits and more.
Runners are well catered for, ...
... they pass the tranquil waters of the Lago di Doberdo, ...
... and they run through beautiful grass- and bushland.
