The Berliner Silvesterlauf (Berlin New Year's Eve Run) is held in the vast Grunewald forest on the western fringes of Germany's capital city.

The event features four races:

Start time Race distance No. of finishers 2015
12.00 2km children, juniors, women 28
12.15 4km 61
12.30 6.3km juniors, women, men 373
13.00 9.9km women, men 1,035

Both the 6.3km and the 9.9km races are challenging multi-terrain single-loop courses.

The route offers fine views of the cityscape in the distance as it takes the runners up and down the slopes of two hills, the Teufelsberg (pictured) and the Drachenberg. Both are man-made hills built of rubble after World War Two.
