The Hannover Marathon is the biggest running event in the state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) in northern Germany.

In 2015, approximately 3400 runners took part in the 10k race, 6400 in the half marathon, and 1800 in the full marathon.

The event also offers a marathon relay (for teams of up to six runners) as well as races for children, inline skaters, walkers, nordic walkers and handbikers.

All races feature flat, fast and certified single-loop courses that begin and end at the imposing Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall).

The marathon and half marathon routes visit Hannover's best sights — the 2.4km-long Maschsee lake, the impressive palaces, gardens and parks of Herrenhausen, and finally the Skulpturenmeile which is home to three Nana sculptures (pictured) by Niki de Saint Phalle.

The time limit to complete the course is four and a half hours for the half and six hours for the full marathon.
