Held in Leipzig, a dynamic and very green city of about 550,000 people in Germany's state of Saxony, the Leipzig Marathon is a long-standing and well-attended event.

Now in its 40th year, the race has welcomed many international top runners, among them former world record holder Tegla Loroupe of Kenya and Leipzig-born Uta Pippig, three-time winner of the marathons in Boston and Berlin.

In addition to the 42.2km marathon the event offers various races for runners of all ages and abilities — a kids' run, a 4k fun run and walk, a 10k, a half marathon, and a marathon relay. Furthermore, it features half marathon races for inline skaters and for wheelchair and handbike racers.

All races begin and end at the modern football arena in the Sportforum complex, which is situated approximately 2km to the west of the historic centre.

The marathon is two laps of an AIMS/IAAF-certified course. The route is mostly flat and fast with hardly any twists and turns, and it passes many of Leipzig's most interesting sights, for instance the Augustusplatz in the city centre (pictured above).

In 2015, the fastest marathon finishers were Tekalegn Tebelu Abebe of Ethiopia (2hr 21min 53sec) and Juliane Meyer of Germany (2hr 57min 35sec). The time limit to complete the first lap is 2hr 45min (2hr 25min for relay teams).
