Amberg - Weiden in der Oberpfalz (Germany), Sunday 20 September 2015
The Freundschaftsmarathon (‘Friendship Marathon’) features a scenic and challenging point-to-point route through the rolling countryside of the Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate) region in Germany's state of Bayern (Bavaria).
Entrants can choose between the following races:
- 21.1km half marathon (run and nordic walking)
- 42.2km marathon
- 42.2km marathon relay (teams of four: 4 x ca. 10.5km)
- 42.2km run & bike (teams of two: one runner is on the bike, the other one runs; the two can change as often as they like)
Starting on the edge of the town of Amberg, the marathon route runs through rural areas and small towns and villages to the finish line on the beautiful main square of Weiden in der Oberpfalz (pictured). The difference between the lowest and the highest point on the course is 90 metres. Overall, the route includes about 335 metres of ascent and the same of descent. Some sections of the course are on gravel.
The half marathon begins in the small town of Schnaittenbach at the halfway mark of the marathon.
The Freundschaftsmarathon takes place every second year. In 2013, more than 1,000 runners took part in the event. The marathon was run in the other direction, from Weiden to Amberg. Wolfgang Würth (2:45:58) and Kerstin Püschl (3:29:06) were the fastest finishers.
