The Marktlauf is held in the spa resort of Bad Hofgastein, a popular skiing and hiking destination in the 40km-long Gasteinertal in the state of Salzburg in Austria.

The event begins with the children's races, followed by the 5k race and the relay for teams of three runners (3 x 1.25km).

Participants in the 5k race run four laps of a 1.25km-long loop course through the pedestrianized town centre and along the leafy Kurpromenade.

After the race, all runners get free entry (for two hours) to the thermal pools of the Alpentherme Gastein — a great place to relax after the work is done.
