The Cracovia Maraton attracts an international crowd of more than 5,000 marathon runners to Poland's ancient capital of Kraków, a lively and beautiful city with a population of 760,000.

The route, which consists of two laps of a 21.1km-long course, is very spectator-friendly as it contains several out-and-back sections, so that runners move within a radius of three kilometres from the start/finish area on Rynek Głowny, Europe's largest medieval town square — and a real showpiece of a square (pictured).

Participants get a fine impression of the many different facets of the city as they run through the Old Town (which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978), through green areas, along the River Wisła, past the castle and cathedral on Wavel Hill, and — like in most city marathons — through some less picturesque areas.

The course is traffic-free and mostly flat, with some gently-undulating sections.

The time limit to finish the race is six hours.
