Celje (Slovenia), Saturday 6 September 2014
The Maraton Celje - Logarska dolina in Slovenia offers four very scenic point-to-point races — 73km, 42km, 27km, and 17km long.
Starting in the town of Celje, which is located on the railway line between the cities of Ljubljana and Maribor, the 73km ultra marathon route runs along the beautiful Upper Savinja Valley (pictured) into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
The shorter races start en route along the valley.
With 3km to go to the finish line, runners turn left into the Logarska dolina, a picture-postcard valley that is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.
Some parts of the course are on trails but most of the route is on asphalt roads (which are not closed to traffic). The route is undulating and overall uphill. The ultra marathon features approximately 2300 metres of ascent and 1750 metres of descent!
Last year, the event welcomed around 800 runners. The ultra marathon winners were Carsten Stegner of Germany (5:13:55) and Slovenia's Nataša Robnik (6:09:51). The time limit to finish the 73km race is twelve hours.
