Held in the Baltic Sea port of Kiel, the Kiel Lauf is one of the biggest running events in northern Germany.

In 2013, approximately 8000 runners took part in either the half marathon, the 10.5km race, the 6km run, or the children's races.

All routes begin and end at Kiel's Opera House, next to the Town Hall, the tower of which overlooks the 'Kleiner Kiel' lake in the city centre.

The half marathon consists of two laps of an undulating and certified course. About 3km of each lap are run along the Kieler Förde, an inlet of the Baltic Sea.
