Frankfurt am Main (Germany), Sunday 26 October 2014
The Frankfurt Marathon is one of Germany's biggest and fastest marathon races, held annually in late October on the streets of Frankfurt am Main, a city of 700,000 inhabitants, located in the heart of a densely-populated metropolitan area in central western Germany.
Last year, 11,000 marathon runners and 1,500 relay teams finished the race, led home by Vincent Kipruto (2:06:15) and Caroline Kirel (2:22:34), both of Kenya.
The route begins and ends at the Messe Frankfurt, the world's second-largest trade fair grounds, situated around two kilometres west of the historic city centre. The finish line is inside the Festhalle, a more-than-100-year-old multi-purpose hall with a magnificent steel-and-glass dome (pictured).
Many runners have set a personal best time in the Frankfurt Marathon as the route is mostly flat and fast with a difference of about 28 metres between the lowest and the highest point on the course. The time limit to finish the race is six hours.
