Participants in the Wien Energie Halbmarathon run three laps around the northern part of the Alte Donau (pictured), which was a section of the Danube before major river engineering works were carried out in Vienna in the 1870s.

In addition to the half marathon, the event offers a 6.8km run (one lap around the lake), a half marathon relay for teams of three runners (3 x 7km), and children's races.

In 2013, the half marathon race had over 1300 participants. The fastest finishers were Tom Eisner (1:15:08) and Astrid Rogl (1:29:04).
