Held in the ‘Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg’, Germany's second-largest city with a population of about 1.7 million, the Hamburg Halbmarathon is one of northern Germany's most popular running events.

In 2013, over 5200 runners completed the gently undulating and scenic half marathon course which passes many of Hamburg's best sights.

The start and finish lines are approximately 3.5 kilometres apart.

Starting on the Reeperbahn street, Hamburg's legendary red-light and amusement district (the ‘Sinful Mile’), participants run two laps through the St. Pauli district, followed by a 12-kilometre run along the harbour, past the warehouses of the Speicherstadt (pictured), through the city centre, and around the Außenalster lake.

The route ends at the Hamburger Rothenbaum, Germany's biggest tennis stadium.

The time limit to complete the course is three hours.
