Held in the "Stadt der Moderne" in the state of Saxony, the Chemnitz Marathon offers various races for all ages and abilities — a 42.2km marathon, a 21.1km half marathon, a 10.55km quarter marathon, a 4.2km ‘Minimarathon’, as well as team and children's races.

Starting and finishing at the Town Hall (pictured), participants in the marathon run four laps of a gently-undulating course through the city of Chemnitz, which is home to about 240,000 people, several outstanding museums, and — due to its turbulent history — to a fascinating mix of architectural styles.

In 2014, the event will be held in early July when the temperatures may be rather high in the region. Fortunately, there is quite a bit of shade on the course as approximately half of the race is run through the wooded Stadtpark (pictured below).

The time limit to complete the marathon is six hours.

The Chemnitz Marathon is a non-profit event. Proceeds will be donated to charity.

Update (26 June 2014): The start/finish area will not be at the Town Hall but at the medieval Roter Turm ("Red Tower"), the oldest buillding in Chemnitz.
